Abe Jacob
Sound Designer
Abe Jacob is a legendary sound designer for theatre and opera. His many Broadway credits include Jesus Christ Superstar, A Chorus Line, Pippin, Chicago, The Who’s Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dancin’, Cats, Evita, and other seminal Broadway shows. His remarkable achievements in theatre sound design virtually brought the field into existence when he was called in to create the sound design for the original Broadway production of Hair.
Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Jacob got his start in San Francisco mixing sound for such 60s rock stars as Jimi Hendrix, The Mamas and the Papas, and Peter, Paul, and Mary, and designed the sound system for the Monterey Pop Festival.
In 2008, the USITT published a book entitled The Designs of Abe Jacob by Richard K. Thomas, which chronicles Jacob's legendary career. In 2016 he was awarded the initial Abe Jacob Award For Excellence in Sound Design by Live Design; an award that went to Jonathan Deans in 2017.
