Dissimilar Metals Considerations on Various Combinations of Compression Sleeve and Wire Rope Terminations and Splices

N226

When compression sleeves are used for terminating and connecting mechanical load bearing wire ropes, often the sleeve and cable materials selected are dissimilar metals. Once a cable and sleeve assembly is placed into service, there are natural physical and chemical interactions that may occur between the various dissimilar metals used in the assembly depending on the cable and connector materials used, and the environment to which they are exposed. Questions regarding the metal compatibility and interaction become important considerations, since certain combinations of materials and environment may subject the swaged termination to corrosion. This presentation provides a brief theory on how dissimilar metals are defined; how corrosion occurs and how to minimize it; and, assistance in the proper selection of best compression sleeve material and plating choices for a given cable material and the environment the connector/cable assembly to which they may be subjected.
